Jan's Atomic Heart cover process.
Here's a little peek inside the design process behind the final cover for Simon Roy's Jan's Atomic Heart, which will be released through New Reliable on June 3rd.

Originally, the book was to be called Morning Coffee with Jan and Anders, but was changed about halfway through the process.

Morning Coffee v1

I think the "vacation photo" approach was a nice touch, but in the end was not a strong enough attention grabber to get people to pick up the book.

We decided to toss around a couple ideas, all of which I liked. The first is based off a panel within the book. The second is the initial meeting between Jan and Anders and the third is, well...it's Jan. Looking reflective.

Rough 1

Rough 2

Rough 3

We decided to explore the second a little, before deciding to move on.

Somewhere around this point, we got our Diamond rep, Jay, into the discussion. This is the first time that I've had a Diamond rep get so involved in the process of the cover design. In the end, it was a great experience. His input was greatly appreciated and really helped in shaping what would become the final cover design.

Based on discussions between the three of us, Simon came up with the following mock ups.

Rough 5

Rough 6

Rough 7

Rough 10

Rough 11

Rough 8

Rough 9

With the final two mock-ups it felt like we really had something that could both grab people, while giving enough of what the reader was getting him/herself into.

After some further discussion, it was agreed to use the arrest scene, combined with the TVs of the latter.

The result:

Rough 12

Almost there!

Almost there

Lastly, the hand drawn title was replaced with a custom font and voila!

Done

I can't begin to describe how ridiculously excited I am for people to read this book.

Keep an eye on the New Reliable Press site. In the next week I'll be posting pages from both Jan's Atomic Heart and True Loves Vol. 2.

I'm not gonna lie, the original cover/title kind of makes me cream my pants a little... actually... a lot. I am also super duper fucking excited for this... I want to just order it online so I can get it right away... but instead I am going to wait and try to get a comic book shop to order some for me.

I know the first cover would probably not sell as well... but seriously wow, I love it. It was really awesome to see all of these covers. Thanks Ed, and good luck!

One of the dangers of posting something like this is that everyone is going to have their favourite title/cover and wonder why we didn't go with it. However, I'm pretty happy with the end result - but would have been just as happy with any of them.

The title change and revisions were really born out of long conversations with our Diamond rep, who had a lot of great advice on changes to make the book more appealing to a larger audience. Ultimately, we really do want to sell as many as possible.

I always think hearing about unused design possibilities and the considerations for the changes are interesting. Like you just said, we probably all have our other favorites, but I'll keep mine under my hat and say that this book looks excellent.

i don't know what the story is about, so i won't give any commentary on which title/ cover works best, but i think they're all cool. looking forward to the preview pages!

I love this, the art feels very different from a lot of stuff I see. In english comics anyway. Definately gonna pick this up!

I liked the Cooper Black typeface though. I understand and agree with all the reasons for changing the title and cover, although I think that the cover image really conveys the serious side of the story, but obviously from the previous title and cover there is a slightly light-hearted dimension to the story as well.
I would have tried the Cooper Black, or something like that on the cover. But maybe it wouldn't have worked, or maybe Simon already did and it didn't work. But that's my two bits.

Looking forward to it

Simon, definitely has a European feel to his art. It's really solid stuff and I can't wait to post the preview. I think that a lot of people are going to be blown away by his work.

I think the main issue I have with Cooper as a font is that it's so recognizably Cooper. It's like a handful of other fonts that are so distinct that when you see them, you think "Hey, that's Cooper!", before you even read the message. For that reason it, to my mind, detracts from the design.

Well put, I see your point.

Literally my only other thought when I was looking at the cover again is that as a whole it feels "heavy" on the left side. With the large text and the people and Jan all on the left and just Simon's name, ostensibly, on the right it feels ill-balanced.

But I say it with love. I never bother critiquing something if I feel it isn't worth giving thought to. I really love it, see ya at the launch!

I will pick this up for sure! Looks great! Lovely penmanship!

Mostly I just wanted to say "penmanship", but it really does look fine.

I think the cover you chose is the best one. It makes me want to find out what happen and why this robot is being taken away, and the fact it appears a robot has broken the law is intriguing.

Thanks! That's exactly what we were striving for.

while I really appreciate the "original" I've got to admit the new one really wins hands down in the "I've got to pick this book up and see what it's about" department.
